Research and capacity building

Wildlife and Environmental Health is one of the research focus areas of the Faculty. It encompasses an exceedingly broad and integrated field of expertise and many individual disciplines, some of which do not exist in the Faculty. Involvement in these areas is managed through the development and expansion of national and international research networks

 

A large proportion of the activities of the Faculty focuses on the disease-related effects at the interface between wildlife, domestic animals and humans, and in the context of conservation medicine within which these concepts are integrated. Preference is increasingly given to projects and programmes dealing with the sensitivity and specificity of diagnostics, vaccines, the epidemiology of the economically important diseases of wildlife and livestock, and the zoonoses.

The Centre for Wildlife Studies facilitates and coordinates this specific research programme on a matrix system within the Faculty. The responsibility for the various projects, their funding and the postgraduate students involved in them, is that of the individual Heads of Department. The detail provided in this section highlights the various fields of activity within each of the Departments, and indicates the person responsible for the individual programmes and projects.
