Prestige Lecture Series

Former Supreme Court of Appeal Judge Louis Harms, an extraordinary professor in the Department of Private Law and the incumbent of the Adams and Adams Chair in Intellectual Property Law, presented the second prestige lecture of the Faculty of Law this year at the Senate Hall, University of Pretoria, on the eve of 13 March 2013. Amongst the considerable accolades for the former Judge is his most recent election as an Honorary Master of the Bench of the Middle Temple.

Prof Johan D. van der Vyver, I.T. Cohen Professor of International Law and Human Rights and an extraordinary professor in the Department of Private Law presented the first prestige lecture for this year hosted by the Faculty of Law in the Moot Court, University of Pretoria, during the morning of 13 March 2013.

 

Prof van der Vyver is the author of many books and more than two hundred law review articles, popular notes, chapters in books and book reviews on human rights and a variety of other subject matters. 


The Prestige Lecture Series of the Faculty of Law is a key highlight on the Faculty's events calendar and was initiated during 2008 when the University of Pretoria celebrated its centenary.

The Faculty of Law, University of Pretoria, hosted its second prestige lecture for the year on Friday, 9 November 2012.  World-renowned Ali Mazrui, Albert Schweitzer Professor in the Humanities at Binghamton University, New York, USA was the key speaker. He is also an Albert Luthuli Professor-at-Large at the University of Jos, Nigeria, as well as an Andrew D. White Professor-at-Large Emeritus and Senior Scholar in African Studies at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York. Prof Mazrui was accompanied by his wife, Pauline Uti Mazrui.

The event was jointly hosted by the Water Research Commission (WRC), the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC); the University of Pretoria’s Institute for International and Comparative Law in Africa; and the Institute for Food, Nutrition and Well-being.

Prof Mazrui addressed some of the expectations of Barack Obama’s presidency.

At a Prestige Lecture hosted by the Faculty of Law on Wednesday, 2 May 2012, Sir Nigel Rodley, Professor at the Human Rights Centre of the University of Essex, member of the United Nations Human Rights Committee and former United Nations Special Rapporteur on Torture presented a public lecture on the UK Human Rights Act. During a week in Pretoria, Sir Nigel also taught on the LLM programme in Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa as part of a teacher exchange between the Centre for Human Rights and the Human Rights Centre at the University of Essex.

At a Prestige Lecture hosted by the Faculty of Law on Monday, 9 November 2009, former Chief Justice Pius Langa and former Justices Yvonne Mokgoro, Kate O'Regan and Albie Sachs of the Constitutional Court gave a professional and personal account of their experiences at the country's highest court since their appointment by former President Nelson Mandela 15 years ago.
