This Department is probably the most productive and strongest department in this field in Southern Africa. It has a long history of stability and excellence. The Department serves different national and international academic, subject and church communities with great diligence. It has an important standing in South Africa, on the African continent and around the world, boasting some comprehensive networks. Many master’s and doctoral degrees of high standing have been supervised in the Department. We wish to serve the academic community and society with work and products of continuous high quality.

Theology students celebrated Mandela Day on Robben Island - 25/07/2014
From Church History and Church Polity

Students in the Department of Church History and Polity and their lecturer, Dr Johan van der Merwe, visited the Western Cape from 14 to 21 July. While there, they had the opportunity to spend a night on Robben Island, in the prison where Nelson Mandela was incarcerated for 27 years.

The Second Conference of Law and Religion in Africa took place from 26 to 28 May 2014 at Stellenbosch University. About 60 scholars, legal professionals, and religious leaders from 15 countries participated in this conference, addressing the theme “Law and Religion in Africa – The Quest for the Common Good in Pluralistic Societies”.
