Ockie Vermeulen and Charl du Plessis are ushering in the Christmas season on 27 November with a unique performance in the Musaion on University of Pretoria’s Hatfield Campus.
Christmas music for piano, bass, organ and percussion from the past 300 years has been specially adapted for Carols & Chords. The program features unusual instrumental combinations that have never been heard before in a Christmas concert. Beloved melodies such as Silent Night, “Somerkersfees” and Little Drummer Boy always make the festive season special and take the audience on a nostalgic journey accompanied by a masterly mix of organ and piano.
In Carols & Chords, Vermeulen and Du Plessis blend their own, unique, personal experience of Christmas music in a contemporary musical style.
Ockie Vermeulen is well known for his Highland Cathedral and Arena CD’s, and is UNISA’s university organist. Charl du Plessis is a Steinway artist and equally sought after as classical and jazz pianist.
Vermeulen and Du Plessis adapted the music themselves, and are supported by Christi-Louise Swanepoel (contra bass) and Hugo Radyn (percussion). The special guest artist is singer and songwriter Dihan Slabbert, who has already produced two CD’s and was a member of both High Five and Il Quinto.
Carols & Chords takes place on 27 November at 15:00 in the Musaion on the University of Pretoria’s Hatfield Campus. Tickets are available from Computicket.
