Students from Artevelde Hogeshool, Belgium 2010

Posted on 27 August 2010

Mss Emmelie Martins and Lien Schreel, two social work students, visited South Africa for four months as part of their internship for their final year of studies. These students form part of an exchange program between the Department of Social Work and Criminology at the University of Pretoria and the Artevelde Hogeschool in Ghent, Belgium.

The two students were placed at the SAVF (Suid-Afrikaanse Vrouefederasie) welfare organization and engaged in community work projects in collaboration with fourth year social work students from our Department. They did their internship under the supervision of Dr Ulene Schiller, the manager of the student unit of the University of Pretoria at the SAVF.

This year the student unit developed a child trafficking awareness campaign in the form of an “interactive play” that was presented at seven primary schools in Pretoria Central, Soshanguve and Mamelodi, reaching 7 621 learners. They also presented age appropriate awareness campaigns in two different high schools in the Pretoria area, and reached 1 600 learners. The students received positive feedback from both the learners and educators; commenting on the awareness that was raised regarding child trafficking, as well as the positive and interactive way in which the students presented the program.

Mss Martins and Schreel further developed a sexual abuse awareness program for pre-school learners which formed part of the SAVF initiative during the national child protection week. This program was implemented at six nursery schools in the Pretoria region and 450 toddlers were reached.

In their final final presentation at the SAVF, the students commented on their enriching experience they’ve had in South Africa. They were exposed to the diverse welfare setting and functioning in the country. Both commented that this experience will contribute to their development as social workers for the future.

Our best wishes to Emmelie and Lien for the future!
