> Read more UP news Be sure to visit the new Wannabee clothing store on the Hatfield Campus next time you are on campus. The store (formerly known as the Tuks Campus Shop) relocated to the Huis and Haard Building (next to Oom Gert se Plek). The Wannabee store has a new name, derived from the bees on the UP shield, and a fresh new look. It now also stocks new ranges with the UP and TUKS brands, as well as innovative brands such as Lecoqsportif and Zoo York. UP appoints a new Vice-Chancellor and Principal The University of Pretoria is pleased to announce that, at an extraordinary meeting held on Monday, 27 July 2009, the University Council resolved to appoint Dr Cheryl de la Rey as the University’s new Vice-Chancellor and Principal. Read more... 2. New developments on the cards for UP campuses Several major developments are taking place at the University of Pretoria, many of which are scheduled to be complete by 2011. The developments are all part of a plan to improve facilities and increase office, teaching and parking space for the University’s staff and students. Read more... 3. UP bids Prof Calie Pistorius goodbye The University of Pretoria held a farewell function for the Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Prof Calie Pistorius, and his wife, Prof Michele Olivier. Prof Pistorius will join the University of Hull in the United Kingdom in September this year as Vice-Chancellor. Read more... 4. UP Gibs offers new Entrepreneurship MBA The University of Pretoria Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS) will be offering a new full-time MBA in Entrepreneurship from August 2009. The course will equip entrepreneurs with management fundamentals, a diverse business network and the ability to operate in a demanding, competitive environment. Read more... 5. Alumni participate in various events and functions Several regional functions and other events provided an opportunity for alumni from various towns, cities and walks of life to interact with their Alma Mater. Regional functions took place as far afield as Windhoek in Namibia. Prof Christof Heyns, Dean of the Faculty of Law, was the speaker at a function in London and businesspeople could attend a breakfast with Mervyn King, corporate governance guru. Read more... 6. News from the TuksAlumni clubs and interest groups The UP alumni have been keeping busy during the winter months. The Golf Club competed against the University of Stellenbosch in the annual Davis Cup championships, and the road runners have been gearing up for the Legends Race. The Food and Wine Guild hosted a snoek braai where they tasted wines from the HermanusPietersfontein wine cellars, and the AmaTuks Supporters’ Club is alive with enthusiasm and support for the Tuks Soccer team. Those include student groups on campus and alumni groups outside the campus, particularly those at specific employers and organisations. Read more... 8. Toyota and the hpc shares a long-term relationship In 2002, when the High Performance Centre (hpc) was established at the University of Pretoria, a sponsorship deal was concluded with Toyota Arcadia, with the initiative of alumnus Sias van den Berg. That sponsorship still exists today and Toyota sponsors all the hpc’s vehicles. Read more... 9. News from the sports campus The athletes of TuksSport have once again done the University proud. Bridgitte Hartley recently became the best female canoeist in the world, LJ van Zyl recorded his best time for the 400 m hurdles in June and is on his way to the IAAF world athletics championships in Berlin with six other UP athletes, while the hockey players and women’s rugby team are also performing well. Read more... 10. Upcoming alumni events and calendar Alumni can look forward to quite a few regional functions and interesting events in the following months. In August, TuksAlumni and CE at UP will be hosting a Women and Entrepreneurship Day, and the Johannesburg region’s annual golf day will take place on 30 October this year. Also read about Kennedy Gihana, André van der Spuy and the 100 year old Oom Willie Fourie. Read more... 12. In memoriam: Alumnus Erich Heine On 1 June 2009, Erich Heine lost his life in an air crash. He was the only South African among the 228 passengers on board the Air France flight that crashed over the Atlantic Ocean when it was on its way from Rio de Janeiro to Paris. He was a brilliant and successful alumnus of the University of Pretoria. Read more...
