TuksSport Combined School was founded as result of the initiative of, amongst others, Mr Kobus van der Walt, the director of TuksSport. The school as it looks today bears little resemblance to the one that started out in a single basement classroom in 2002. In the search for a model of teaching and learning that is both flexible and supportive, the school has undergone many changes and transformations.
The school was started with a mere 27 learners in 2002 and each year thereafter showed a substantial growth in learner number. There are currently 146 learners in TuksSport High school. The first group of 27 students that joined the school was made up of gymnasts and tennis players, followed by the introduction of Swimming and Soccer Academies the year after.
The phenomenal levels of success achieved by learners from various sporting codes paved the way to the addition of more academies. National Federations and private clubs alike recognised and appreciated the academic support and flexibility offered by the school, the excellent training facilities of the University of Pretoria as well the tailor-made sport specific packages comprising professional sport science and medical services (including sport psychology) and accommodation offered by the High Performance Centre, and moved their athletes to the HPC. SAFA, SA Table Tennis, SA Rowing are some of the national federations that joined the hpc and TuksSport School.
