Staff members distribute books in Malelane

Posted on 02 February 2010

Members of the Department of Humanities Education and the Faculty of Education spent a weekend distributing books in the Malelane district in November 2009.

A member of staff of the Department of Humanities Education, Dr Cecilia du Toit, an American post-doctoral research fellow working in the same department, Dr Pam Sheppard, and two students of the Faculty, Michelle van den Heever and Baby Yende, who all share a passion for books and an understanding of the importance of reading to children, spent a weekend distributing books in the Malelane district in November 2009.

The Regional English Language Office of the American Embassy kindly donated four mobile book collections with hundreds of books and supplied a van and drivers to enable the Faculty members to take the books to learners in areas of Mpumalanga that have no access to books for leisure reading. A book day was also held at the Mambatha Primary School on Saturday 8 November and learners, their teachers and community leaders shared in the joy of communal reading experiences.
