The Department of Business Management originated in 1927 and is the second oldest business management department in the country. It has always been a leader in this subject.
The Department has the following focus areas:
business management and strategic management;
entrepreneurship;
supply chain management (logistics);
international management;
e-business;
leadership.

The Department of Business Management conferred 185 degrees during the University of Pretoria’s Autumn Graduation Ceremony that took place on 4 April 2013.
The Albert Luthuli Centre for Responsible Leadership (ALCRL) at the University of Pretoria released its research findings on the state of corporate governance in South Africa on 22 May 2013.
The research initiative was taken in partnership with the Institute of Directors in South Africa (IoDSA) and Media Tenor, supported by Ernst & Young and the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA), and looked at the development of the King Codes since the early 1990’s to the recent adoption of King III within companies.
Mr Anne Staal and Mr Marius van der Woude from the Hanze University Groningen in the Netherlands recently visited the Department of Business Management. Hanze University Groningen is the largest university of applied science in the northern part of the Netherlands.
The National Biodiversity and Business Network of South Africa was officially launched at the Gordon Institute of Business Sciences (GIBS) in Sandton on 15 May 2013.
The University of Pretoria was represented by Dr Claudious Chikozho and Ms Anesu Makina, both from Albert Luthuli Centre for Responsible Leadership (ALCRL), as well as Prof Don Cowan from FABI.
The African Union’s New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Albert Luthuli Centre for Responsible Leadership (ALCRL) recently co-hosted a roundtable aimed at establishing a continental leadership transformation programme.
