Attention all women entrepreneurs: The TuksAlumni Office (in cooperation with Continued Education at UP) is looking for women entrepreneurs with their own businesses. We plan to present a Women and Entrepreneurship Day in August and would like to involve entrepreneurs who are also UP alumni. 1. Prof Chris de Beer appointed as Senior Vice-Principal

The Council of the University of Pretoria designated Prof Chris de Beer, one of the University’s vice-principals, as the University’s Senior Vice-Principal, at its meeting on 11 March 2009.  Read more...

2. Appointment of a new Vice-Chancellor and Principal progresses well

The current Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Prof CWI Pistorius, publicly announced his resignation on 25 February to take up an offer of appointment as Vice-Chancellor at the University of Hull, UK.  The University Council then considered the current Regulation and Procedure for Appointment of the Vice-Chancellor and Principal and approved some amendments as well as a specific timeframe for the recruitment, selection and appointment of the new Vice-Chancellor and Principal.   Read more...

3. TuksAlumni bursaries make a difference

In 2008, TuksAlumni once again helped meritorious students to finance their studies and take a few steps closer to realising their dreams. Just over R203 000 was allocated to 18 students in the form of bursaries. Read more...

4. Engineering facilities expanded to meet national need

The Council of the University of Pretoria has approved a project for the expansion of the School of Engineering (lecture rooms, laboratories and office space), as well as a parking garage for approximately 1 000 vehicles. Read more...

5. Alumni events cater for all

The TuksAlumni Office organises a variety of events for alumni in an attempt to cater for all tastes. Over the past months, the Super Seniors had a brunch, the AfroTenors performed at Kya Rosa, alumni had an opportunity to support their Alma Mater in the FNB Varsity Cup and a business breakfast was held with Steven Bacher as speaker. 6. News from the TuksAlumni clubs and interest groups

The Golf Club had a very successful championship, and the roadrunners already have the Loskop and Two Oceans marathons behind them and are gearing up for the Comrades and the TuksAlumni Legends Race. TuksClub 60+ had their spit braai and annual general meeting in February and their visit to the Voortrekker Monument and Heritage Foundation in April was an enriching experience.  Read more...

7. Prestige lecture held at Faculty of Law

Mr Enver Surty, former Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, addressed guests at a prestige lecture of the Faculty of Law on 17 March 2009. This formed part of a series of lectures organised by the faculty, to which alumni were also invited.  Read more...

8. Johannesburg regional alumni association formally established

A historic meeting of TuksAlumni in the Johannesburg Region took place on 15 April 2009. This is the first time that a group of alumni formally established a regional association of TuksAlumni and accepted a set of rules according to which they will be able to act in future. Read more...

9. Upcoming alumni events

The calendar is chock-a-block with events for the winter months – alumni can attend regional events, a business breakfast or a house concert at Kya Rosa. Please also take note that the deadline for nominations for the prestigious Laureate Award for this year is 14 July.  Read more...

11. Dr Andries Terblanché receives Laureate Award

Dr Andries Terblanché was nominated for a Laureate Award last year, but could not attend the Laureate Ball as he lives and works in Australia and had prior commitments. Earlier this year, the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences invited him for a lecture. At the event, Dr Piet Botha, former Chairperson of the TuksAlumni Board, presented the award to him. 12. Children of alumni can now join the Junior Tukkie Club

The Junior Tukkie Club is an initiative of the University of Pretoria and its aim is to identify learners throughout South Africa that are leaders on academic, cultural and sport terrain, as well as learners who show distinct leadership capabilities. Read more...

13. Tuks law students win in Hong Kong  

The Faculty of Law of the University of Pretoria continued its winning streak from last year to emerge as the winners of the Commonwealth Moot Court Competition, which coincided with the 16th Commonwealth Law Conference held in Hong Kong from 5 to 9 April 2009. Read more...
