Johan Badenhorst, presenter of the famous “Voetspore” television series aired on KykNet, visited the Department of Tourism Management as a guest lecturer to the first-year class on 17 April 2012.
As intrepid explorer of the African continent, he shared tips on 4x4 over landing across borders to discover wonders off the beaten track. Students were given a first-hand account of the “Voetspore” crew’s exciting, daunting and unforgettable experiences along their Cape to Cairo and Casablanca to Cape routes. The visit contributed to students’ understanding of the industry in several ways. Firstly, the logistics behind an organised tour of this nature; secondly, appreciation for the importance of various natural and cultural resources as potential tourism attractions; and thirdly, the nature of experiences shared by adventure tourists as a niche market segment.
Through discussions with the presenter, lecturers could also identify a potential destination in northern Africa where the honours project of the second semester can make a strategic contribution to stakeholders in that destination. As for the possibility to go along on the next trip, the presenter playfully requested the lecturers to take a place in the long queue of hopefuls.
