Disability and Development

Including disability within the context of development: Opportunities, challenges, constraints and strategies

A research project funded by the South African Netherlands Research Programme on Alternatives in Development

The Centre for Augmentative and Alternative Communication (CAAC) and the Department of Sociology of the University of Pretoria, in collaboration with the University of Amsterdam and the Hogeschool Leiden, have embarked on a research project that will focus on mainstreaming disability in development and poverty alleviation.

The overall aim of the proposed project is to assess the extent to which disability has been included within current development policies, strategies and programmes of major development agencies in South Africa and to explore the opportunities, constraints and potential strategies for the incorporation of disability as an issue, and people with disabilities as participants, within development policies, programmes and projects.
