Researcher speaks out on food security

Ms Anesu Makina, Research Officer at the Albert Luthuli Centre for Responsible Leadership (ALCRL), was a panellist at the first Africa Food Security Conference held in Nairobi, Kenya during August 2013. The title of her presentation was “The role of the private sector: Challenges and opportunities”.

The conference, hosted by the United Nations Environment Programme, explored ecosystem-based approaches to enhance food security, ecosystem productivity and climate change adaptation in Africa. “Businesses in all sectors rely on biodiversity and ecosystem services and many companies have started to consider the business risks associated with neglecting ecosystem issues”, said Ms Makina during her presentation. She also highlighted the importance of farmer collaboration to enable them to meet the private sector’s demand for very large quantities of products that meet certain criteria.

Findings of corporate governance research project released

The Albert Luthuli Centre for Responsible Leadership (ALCRL) at the University of Pretoria released its research findings on the state of corporate governance in South Africa on 22 May 2013.

The research initiative was taken in partnership with the Institute of Directors in South Africa (IoDSA) and Media Tenor, supported by Ernst & Young and the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA), and looked at the development of the King Codes since the early 1990’s to the recent adoption of King III within companies.
